Join us on July 26 for a special Life of the Mind lecture with Dr. Laura A. Smit, professor of theology at Calvin University and pastor at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church (ECO) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Dr. Smit's teaching and writing explore the intersection of beauty and faith, drawing on her background in medieval philosophy, theological aesthetics, and pastoral ministry.
In her lecture, A Sense of Sweetness: In Search of a Reformed Theology of Beauty, Dr. Smit will challenge the common assumption that the Presbyterian and Reformed tradition has little interest in beauty. Instead, she will explore how our theological convictions shape a distinctive understanding of beauty and how that vision can deepen our appreciation of worship, the arts, and the Christian life.

This summer, our pastors invite you to read the first book in the Wilderking Trilogy, a book by Jonathan Rogers called The Bark of the Bog Owl.
On one level, this is a fun summer read, whether you are 1 year old or 91. The author describes the book as “swampy adventure fiction” and The School Library Journal says that “Roger’s writing is terrifically appealing. The adventure and humor are first rate.”
On another level, this is a deep summer read that is a sort of re-telling of the biblical David and Goliath story. As such, it not only invites the reader deeper into the biblical story, but also raises fascinating questions about how the arts can intersect with our faith.
Grab a copy (wherever you buy or borrow books - including our own library!) and dive right in! We will be hosting a multigenerational conversation about the book on August 9th at 4:00PM in the church library!
“‘Who knows what the future holds? Only the One God,’ explained Aidan. ‘You live the little bit of life that you can see in front of you. You live it well. And that gets you ready for whatever unfolds next.’” -The Bark of the Bog Owl
